My New Broadband

Having complained about P1 previously, I decided that it's actually the lesser evil compared to Maxis. I absolutely hated the recent throttle exercise done by Maxis, after having used it to more than a year. It was great going back then but now, it's a sad case of slow being slower.

I signed up for P1 Wimax (AGAIN) and this round, I guess I'll be sticking by to it longer. This round, the modem actually came with a wifi dongle to enable users to surf wirelessly within the confines of their home. COOL!

Oh, the fact that they have a fair usage policy limit of 20GB helps a lot in my decision to abandon Maxis. Days with slow speed and non-downloads begone!

Broadband Rants

I may not be a smoker but I think I know how it feels to be going through a cold turkey phase. Yup, I'm addicted to high speed broadband.

I used to be proud of my Maxis Broadband connection which gave me the ability to download stuff at the speed of sound... okay, not exactly that fast but at a 'decent' speed of approx. 200 KBps. Sadly, those days are far and few between now.

The DL speed for the past two weeks has been agonizingly SLOW, crawling at a pathetic rate of 7-8 KBps only. I tried calling Maxis about it but sadly they can't seem to do much about it. And here I am, paying RM99 for such services. Sad, really sad.

Any chance of jumping to the other side(s)? Not likely. I tried P1 Wimax for 10 days; not exactly what it was touted to be. Cousin Mark said Izzi; easy for him to say, not my cup of tea though. My colleague Rafi said Digi; yes, I'm a loyal Digi phone user but too bad the broadband coverage has been slow to spread out. Let's not even get started on Streamyx, if you know what I mean.

So where does that leave me with? Nowhere for now, just gotta pray that Maxis buck up soon or I'm seriously gonna start looking elsewhere.

PEACE OF MIND
If you were to ask your neighbor, "What would give you peace of mind?", he might tell you, "A vacation in Bermuda!" or "An extra hundred grand would give me peace" or even "A Ferrari would make me content".

But going places and getting stuff is usually a temporary solution.

Let's say you buy a lottery ticket and by some miracle, you win your dream Ferrari. Today, you are content. Tomorrow, you are saying, "If I could just catch that little punk who scratched it in the car park!".

Peace of mind rarely comes form getting more stuff. Getting more stuff usually leads to wanting even more stuff!

Peace of mind starts with being grateful for what you have right now.

Gratitude is power, and here's why...

When you are thankful for what you have - for the friends you have and the things you've got - you attract more good people and good things.

People who always complain about what they don't have, stay stuck. Complainers attract more things to complain about.

It is a law of life. It's hard to explain, but you can observe it around you. We get more of what we dwell upon.

Start by being thankful. Be happy with what you have now and more will come your way.

CRAP! Yesterday saw Liverpool finally getting the better of Manchester United as Ryan Babel's late goal clinched a 2-1 win over my team. CRAP! Liverpool had lost seven of the last eight league encounters between them, dating back to 2004, and the Reds fell behind at Anfield when Carlos Tevez struck for United in the third minute.

But Wes Brown's own goal gave Liverpool a 27th-minute equaliser and Babel (pic), coming on as a substitute just six minutes earlier, grabbed the decisive goal 13 minutes from full-time. The day got even worse for Sir Alex Ferguson when Nemanja Vidic was sent off in the dying minutes.

What else can I say? My team is languishing at the bottom half of the BPL table after three games and not only have they lost, they looked lost too.

A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said: 'I am blind, please help.' There were only a few coins in the hat.

Of course both signs told people the boy was blind. But the first sign simply said the boy was blind. The second sign told people they were so lucky that they were not blind. Should we be surprised that the second sign was more effective?

Moral of the Story: Be thankful for what you have. Be creative. Be innovative. Think differently and positively.

What is my country coming to? It's bad enuff when they start passing derogatory remarks about pigs but when they start asking some 'Babi' to 'balik Cina', that's really an insult to all Malaysians.

Why is it that some narrow-minded people think that only people of a certain race can stay behind in this homeland of mine? And that the rest are 'legal immigrants' that can (or should) go back to their ancestor's land?

Come on lah, we are all MALAYSIANS! We were born here just like you did, just like the rest of them, so this is our country too, dammit! Perhaps they need a kick up their butts in order to get them to broaden their minds (which is probably located there, thus the need to kick it!).

I got this piece from a fellow blogger whom I met online recently. It's always inspiring to read the mind of someone so positive about life.

A group of graduates, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old university professor. Conversations soon turned into complaints about stress in work and in life.

Wanting to offer his guests coffee, the professor went into the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups - porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite - telling them to help themselves to the coffee.

When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said, "If you noticed, all the nice looking expensive cups were taken, leaving behind the simple and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that in itself is the source of your problems and stress. Be assured that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee."

"In most cases, it is just more expensive and in some cases, even hides what we drink. What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the best cups. Then you began eyeing each other's cups."

"Now consider this", said the professor. "Life is the coffee; the jobs, money and positions in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain Life. A Remorse Too Late

When I mentioned yesterday about a girl's eloping plan that went awry, it seems that today the whole thing is purportedly a misunderstanding. It seems the boyfriend met the deceased's parents at the police station and clarified a lot of the misunderstandings.

So it seems he's not an internet buaya after all, that he "really didn't know" why he persuaded the deceased to climb down the building using a raffea string, and that he's not in debt. RIGHT!!!

I still say the same thing. There's a world of difference between virtual and reality, and that our human relationship can be better if we took the chance to get to know one another. This whole thing could have been avoided if all parties didn't hide anything. The deceased need not hide her relationship from her parents, and her parents shouldn't have been so unapproachable to make the daughter be afraid to introduce her boyfriend.

Of Internet Predators

I've been reading an article about the death of a 21-year-old girl who fell down from her condominium while trying to climb nine storeys down to elope with her 34-year-old boyfriend. She was climbing down on a raffea string (can you believe it?) tied from the kitchen balcony and assisted (!) by an Indonesian maid. Apparently she lost her footing and plunged to her death, just as she was scaling down to meet her boyfriend who was waiting in a car.

It seems the boyfriend had 'coerced' the girl to elope via such a method, as it was claimed that she might have gotten pregnant by the guy. What's frightening is that this guy is apparently a cyberspace 'predator' as he had allegedly befriended 25 young girls from rich families via Friendster.

At this day and age, we really have to be careful of who we befriend in cyberspace. We've come to a point where a lot of our interactions with other people are restricted to behind the monitors only, which is kinda depressing if you ask me. Flaws and faults can be easily disguised as you wouldn't be able to verify for sure what the real character is like.

I have a daughter of my own, and I sure don't want her to be fooled. Let our children see more of the real world instead of the virtual world. The real world may not be perfect but at least we'll get to know the real deal.

Modern Day Convenience

During lunch today, I saw a new retail concept that opened inside the Petronas Service Station here in Bukit Tinggi. Mail Boxes Etc. offers quite a number of services that competes with the post office. Apart from providing mailbox services, it also provides services to pack and ship (great for ebay fans), printing and photocopying, fax and internet, gift wrapping, etc.

I had to use their courier service to send something to KL and it only costs me RM5.25 (price rising soon) using City-Link, which can also be tracked online. If you want to courier within Peninsular Malaysia, give them a tenner and you'd get some loose change back. Fast and not too expensive, if you ask me.

If you're a student or worker from elsewhere, and you wish to have a 'real address' to send and receive stuff, then this is the place for it, particularly if you're itching to get onto the ebay bandwagon to make some moolahs! Any shipment to overseas will be using DHL.

I guess it's time to do something about my ebay account.

Datukships: A Dime A Dozen?

Today is NS YamTuan's B'day and as usual, the annual Datukship giveaway list came out like cookies lah. I was quite happy to see some well deserved awards given out, particularly to one of our former badminton greats.

This comes just days after our national squash queen got a Datukship too, which me thinks is a wee bit too early lah. Bagi lah dia after few more years of glory on the circuit, now's a bit too soon lah. Nanti sudah jadi complacent, susah lah.

In the NS list also was a certain Malaysian angkasawan or cosmonaut or astronaut or rocket passenger or whatever name you wanna call it lah. This one ah? Ehh.... no comment leh.

The Uncertainties Of Life

I've just been reminded how uncertain life can sometimes be. In the course of our life, we sometimes make plans so as not to fail (as the saying goes, failing to plan is planning to fail). Nevertheless, sometimes we are reminded that man proposes but God disposes.

A colleague of mine was supposed to get married on the weekend. A happy occasion, if ever there was one. Unfortunately, no one foresaw what God had in mind to test one's perseverance when my colleague's house was razed by fire a few days before the wedding. How cruel can fate be at times.

In life, we will just need to keep moving on with life, for there will always be tests aplenty on our journey of life. Have faith in the face of adversity and we will emerge stronger and better.

Wifi Breakdown

It's been almost a week since I last blogged, all because of the f**kin' Maxis Broadband power adapter that gave way. Getting it replaced was a real hassle, being given the runaround by the Maxis Centre in Klang. Adding to the insult was the Maxisbb technician who didn't wanna come to Klang to replace it for me, despite me being told that they would make house calls! What lah...

I finally managed to get it replaced at the Maxis Centre at Sunway Pyramid. Speaking of which, it's been ages since I last came here and what a transformation this place has undergone. The parking's absolutely shopper-friendly, the atmosphere inside certainly exudes class and comfort, and it has expanded to make room for more retailers. Truly a shopping paradise.

As it is, I'm blogging from Starbucks (getting to be a habit to blog from cafes) but the downside is, the wifi here is TNS really SLOW! Well, beggars can't be choosers, what more when using free wifi from a place that's frequented by plenty of people. With four Japanese women sitting at the next table talking LOUDLY, and other visitors all brandishing their laptops in front of them, this place is really happening.

Here's to my hope that I can get back to my finger-tapping journeys tomorrow.

Taxes - One Of Life's Certainties

Two weeks ago, I received a letter from the Income Tax Dept (Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri) asking me to present the original copies of my EA form, book purchase receipts and my share dividend vouchers for 2007. I was told it's pasrt of a random audit, which was fine to me.

A few days ago, I received another letter from LHDN but this time, it gave me a shock because it was asking me to pay for additional taxes accumulated since 2005 till now. WHAT??? Additional taxes? Since when did I owe them money? And guess what? I supposedly owe them 4.4K!!! I almost wanted to start cursing them in the presence of my parents!

Today, I went to the LHDN office in Cheras to ask them about the whole thing. After much explanation from them, I had to accept the fact that it wasn't their fault; it was my company's fault! I now know that I'm working for a company that has incompetent fools running the HR Dept. and causing me to be misled into filling my tax forms wrongly.

With the explanation from LHDN, I managed to obtain a letter from them to be given to my employer for scheduled monthly deductions to pay that 4.4K over six months. And that, my friends, is something that's gonna make my life more difficult for the next few months, as I'll be short by RM700 monthly from July to December. Fuel hikes, rising price of goods, and now THIS!

Firm But Gentle, Fair And Just

I've been looking at all the various quotes that I have on my whiteboard and this one always stands out: Firm but Gentle, Fair and Just.

In business, as in life, we should strive to be Fair and Just to everyone and everything in most situations. By being fair, we would ensure that the chances of fairness happenning back to you is greatly improved. Only then will just causes happen in our lives.

Likewise, in situations where we are tested on our patience and perseverance, we must remain firm to our principles. Be being firm, we would ensure that the chances of respect shown towards us is greatly improved too. Only then will gentle behaviours be shown by others to us.

Violence begets violence; be Firm but Gentle in dealing with every situation; be Fair and Just when dealing with people. Do so, and peace will come to every situation, with respect from everyone.

Govt's Belt-tightening Measures

I can't seem to shake off this nagging feeling that the Government's belt-tightening measures seem more like lip service than a real effort to save our tax-paying money.

I mean, come on... how do you expect me to believe that cutting their Entertainment Allowance and Paid Annual Vacations is gonna do anything significant? It all seems more like a show than anything else, and we know the Government HAS that ability to 'wag the dog".

Ordinary folks are starting to feel the pinch, and I do believe inflation is gonna kick in like nobody's business very very soon.

Me? I'd probably have to eat less... as if I'm not skinny enough already!

Choices In Life

In life, we have choice in everything. Do or don't do, go or don't go, work or don't work, be male or be female (yes, you can 'choose' this by yourself now!), be happy or be sad, everything is a choice.

Whatever choice we make, HAVE NO REGRETS.

I chose to buy an apartment in Bukit Beruntung, thus I shouldn't regret it even though it's lying idle and has no prospect of growth in the near future.

I chose to work for my present company, thus I shouldn't regret it even though it's starting to look more like a flagging ship than a flagship.

I was 'chosen' by my company to be posted to a faraway place to work, so even then I shouldn't regret it even though I'm forced to spend far more time travelling to work and incurring more costs for fuel and toll.

But like I said, in life we do have a choice, even in a 'no choice' situation. If you look at it, I could have chosen to quit or to accept the posting. I 'chose' to accept the posting.

A friend of mine, skymagenta, told me something related, haiku-style:

I did notice the price written as 270.4 sen whic is NOT equivalent to RM2.70, okay?

And it looks like I'm not the only one who noticed.

The Government had better have a DAMN GOOD explanation to us!

The Only Way Is UP!

Congratulations to the government, they've just moved their citizen's lives a notch up towards unbearable levels.

The price of petrol has jumped from RM1.92 a litre to RM2.70 a litre, a jump of 40%! WAH LAO EH... gila kah? This morning, I went to feed my car with it and the bill? RM96.00 as opposed to my normal RM72.00! There goes my breakfast money.

Let's not even talk about the massive jam last evening when the word spread of the increase. Cars everywhere started queueing up at petrol stations, causing massive jams at most roads. What normally is an half-hour trip home from work turned out to be a two-hour torture crawl.

I'm not going to rationalise on the government's move, not that I can do anything about it anyway (elections not coming anytime soon). Rather, I think it's time to seriously consider some cost-saving and fuel-saving measures of my own.

Drive slower (not much fun, still...)
Drive less often (there goes my beer jaunts).
Don't drink and drive (oops, wrong topic).
Don't load up the car unnecessarily (throw out the spare tyre???)
Don't sell the car (not even for a smaller one).
Move nearer to work place (not that I find Klang to my liking).
Take public transportation (I'M JOKING!!).

*SIGH* At the end of the day, I think I'd still be driving like Schumacher, going anywhere I like anytime I like, and paying for the extra petrol anyway. *SIGH*

Time To Change?

As I sit in the office of my new posting in Klang, I'm just about thinking whether it's time for some changes to come into my career. The fact that I'm alone in my office today seem to give me ample time and space to gather my thoughts on this.

It's a drag having to wake up so d@mn early at 7.00pm to travel to work. To travel daily approx. 90 km to and fro, plus paying tolls of RM13.20 total for both ways, is making me mad as h#ll. And to rub salt into the wound, I'm not fairly compensated for this!

I guess most people are used to such unfair deals in life by now but hey, not everyone is a willing participant of the rat race. Okay, I'll admit I'm stuck for now but looking at the things are going, perhaps a change wouldn't be that bad an idea.

Hmm... time to change job then... or change career??

Well, looks like I'm not the only one that's thinking of reinventing and starting something. Okay, so the Malay Mail isn't exactly something new that's just started, nor is it really reinventing.
According to the Malay Mail's Chairman, Datuk Ibrahim Mohamad Nor in his editorial:

Given the times we live in, reinvention is the current buzzword...

To the new MALAY MAIL, however, this is not a reinvention rather, it is a serious bid to reclaim the position and the voice we used to own in the newspaper world and, geographically, in the Klang Valley.
...

In short, it's all about giving a voice to the general public, to be heard of their grievances, joys and sorrows.

Once upon a time, I used to enjoy reading this afternooon paper for its groundbreaking news and expose. Sadly though, it seems to have gone down the drain the last few years (mismanagement or interference, who knows). Well, it's good to know that they're back to reclaim their status as THE PAPER THAT CARES.

Start Of A New Way Of Life

Okay, so maybe I got caught up in the blogging euphoria too.

Since Dr M and The Star's Wong Chun Wai decided to join the 'monkey' bandwagon, now seems like a good time for me to do so too!

What's my blog all about? Well, it's gonna be the usual ramblings about everything in life... you know, politics, careers, love, food, sex... we'll see how it goes. Oh, and just because I'm a man doesn't necessarily mean sex is always on my mind (and likewise for my blog-thoughts too).

Malaysia has celebrated 50 years of independence, and changes have been apparent. We've had a real tsunami and a political tsunami happening, so maybe it's time to change the way we think too...
